After a happy lunch with Hans and June - our first guests in our new home - we decided to go for a sunset walk on our local beach. We arrived on the beach just as the setting sun was illuminating the foaming tops of the waves one or two last times.
Breathing in the fresh ozone-laden air, we began to walk toward the rock pool when we spied a policeman and I couldn't help mischievously suggesting to Richard that he was there to guard our beach from a terrorist attack. We noticed a small red flag planted in the sand nearby. As we progressed along the beach I said to Richard, "There's another policeman on the other end of the beach" which was pooh-poohed. But sure enough when we drew closer we saw another small red flag and it was indeed another policeman.
This cannot be right, I thought. Here we are retiring away from the big smoke to a quieter safer life and we no sooner settle than we have a police presence on our local beach. On our walk back, we saw a third policeman with a measuring wheel taking measurements along the sand and a fourth on the top of the bank above the beach surveying the sweep of the bay.
By this time we were betting on what it might be - my guess was they were expecting a body to wash up on the beach between the red flags. Richard said this was not possible as they could not predict so exactly where a body might wash up.
On returning home and turning on the news, we found out what was going on but seems like we missed the main action. And given that more bones might wash up on the beach in the course of time, my guess was actually reasonably close to the real story.
We enjoyed our walk and will be doing lots more given that the fresh air and exercise are likely to improve our health and well-being significantly. News story link. Picture coming soon.
